I know many of you don’t think about the dangers that can appear when you are typing a keyword in the search field. But if you are a newbie and you have no technical and security knowledge than you should be aware on the keywords you are using for your searches because there is one step away of getting a nice computer infection. That’s why a good antivirus is always the best option.

Hacker’s success is based on the large amount of people they can attract. That’s why they are searching for the trends and watch for the people needs. A well known antivirus company, Mcafee, had made some researches related to the top dangerous keywords used for searches. They have searched for more than 2600 popular keywords and for each keyword they have examined the first five pages of results across each of five major search engines. This means more than 413000 unique URLs checked. Keywords were ranked in two ways: the average risk of the results and the maximum risk of the riskiest page of results. A general conclusion was that “lyrics” and anything that includes “free” has the highest risk percentage of exposing users to malware and fraudulent web sites.

From the most popular searches, it seems that the keyword “screensaver” is the most dangerous with maximum risk of 59.1 percent. In the image below you can see other keywords that reveal a high infection risk. (Source)

We can’t really understand how do scammers operate and why some keywords are riskier than others, but what we can do is to install good security suites and to learn some essential basis related to our online security.

In the beginnings, Internet censorship was applied in China, but we didn’t care because we were not affected. Later, another country where Internet censorship was applied was Australia and again we were indifferent. Now it seems that this trend is invading Europe. Internet censorship is on verge to be applied in Germany.

An official online petition titled „No indexing and blocking of Internet sites“ gathered within three days 50,000 signatures, the number required by a petition to be heard by the Parliament. “The running time of an e-Petition in Germany is 6 weeks – within this time over 130,000 people signed making this e-Petition the most signed and most successful ever.”(Source)

Over 500 people carrying banners to get attention about the unfair act of taking the freedom of the information were protesting during the government’s official press conference. More than that, they gave solutions on how to deal with child pornography without introducing the censorship architecture.

Even if there were many protests, it seems that a list containing the content desired to be censored in future is already being made by the politicians.

It seems that after banning YouTube and many other important information resources for Internet users, China has decided to ban blogs from Blogger.com for two weeks. It is called the “blanket ban” and the majority believes that it’s related to the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident. There are also other ideas as others wonder if this is a technical difficulty as hinted on Blogger’s known issues page.

The ban affects blogs hosted on the blogspot.com sub domain and their number s not small, just about 275 million. The action started on 16th May and it’s considered to be ended on 4th June. Under this restriction, users are spreading the words through Twitter and are searching for different ways to access and post on their blogs.

At this moment one of the most popular solutions to post on blogs are: post by email and auto-post via Facebook.
Blogger has offered the “Mail to Blogger” service which allows bloggers to publish new posts while on the move. Using this features, posts will be automatically post. An alternative is Posterous - which will email your articles to blogger@posterous.com and they will auto-post the message to your blog. Regarding Facebook, there is an app which enables you to update blog from your Facebook profile automatically.

On the other hand, for users who would like to read posts from banned blogs the solutions are:

translate the banned blogs

subscribe to banned blogs through their RSS reader

A dispute grown these days in France due to the bill “Creation and Internet“, which intend to control downloads over the Internet. The persons enhanced in illegal downloads will receive 3 notices from the new web police and then if he continue doing this will have his Internet connection cut off for a year.

As a result there was already an action stimulated by net users who are against to these new web laws.
John Kennedy, head of International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said that “The new French law takes the right approach and sets an example to the rest of the world” (Source). Although at the beginning of 2009, Internet users from New Zeeland confronted with the same regulations. But they managed to stop their government from submitting alike procedures.

Now let’s see what are going to do french web users. They are supported by the Socialists who are against the law and are the only ones who could sabotage the regulation.

In an older post I talked about the differences between static IP address and dynamic IP address. The conclusion was that it’s much easier to change your dynamic IP address than the static one while you are connected to the Internet. In this post I will talk about two ways of changing the IP address, through proxy websites or using a software that hides IP address.

A proxy website is a website that allows you to visit specific websites that are blocked on your computer due to an Internet filter or parental control software. Proxy site are also providing you anonymity while surfing the Internet and prevents third-part applications to collect private information about you. The use of these proxy websites is legal and there are many free services available, providing proxies from all the World’s countries. The disadvantage is that being free, there are too many people accessing them and this might slow down your Internet connection. Some pages might load slowly and watching videos might be impossible. A good resource with proxy websites you can find on proxy.org.

Regarding the software that hides IP address, things are a little bit different. First of all, these applications have a specific proxy list embedded. The quality of the application is strongly related to the proxy list provided. Usually an application that had dedicated proxies will never be free. But the advantage of using a software like this, is that your Internet connection will not be slowed down as it might happen if you are using a proxy website. Another advantage of the software that hides IP address is that once you have bought a license you can use it as long as you want and there is no time lost in searching for proxies. Although, it is important to test the trial version to be sure that the application works fine and that you are pleased with the proxy locations embedded in the software and the Internet speed.

There are applications that more that the hiding IP address feature has other functionalities like cleaning your online tracks: Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Internet History etc, providing in this way, complete anonymity.

If you have more advantages or disadvantages related to the use of a proxy website or of the software that hides IP address please let us know in the comments section below.

I’m sure there are many people are asking themselves what is the difference between dynamic and static IP address. Once you make a clear idea about this you will further understand the details related to hiding the IP.

Each computer has assigned a unique number which is a permanent address on the Internet. These numbers are given by an Internet service provider (ISP). ISP’s (Internet service provider) are companies that assure Internet access to peoples and companies. An ISP can also provide other services like Web site building and virtual hosting. These unique numbers given by the ISP represent the static IP address of the computer. The purpose of these addresses is to help computers to be located so that the interconnection to be alive.

The idea was that every computer to have its own static IP address. But considering the large amount of computers, there were not enough IP numbers to manage with. The ISP’s solution was to decrease the static IP addresses’s number they were given and to assign temporarily IP addresses to a requesting Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) computer from a list of IP addresses. This temporary IP address is in fact the dynamic IP address. These dynamic IP addresses are assigned only while the computer is connected to the Internet. When the connection is closed, the dynamic IP address will be assigned to another computer.

So the most important difference between static IP and dynamic IP is that the first one is the same every time you connect to the Internet, while the second one changes each time you connect to the Internet.

Early this year I wrote a post about the Downandup virus, also known as Kido Conficker. It is a worm that spreads through networks with low security, storage media and computers without the latest security updates. When I wrote about it, the virus has already infected millions of PC’s and I thought it will soon end with all this.

It seems that I was wrong. More than that, the Conflicker worm, got into hundreds of medical devices in US hospitals and some other countries. The good new in this story is that patients were not harmed. The infection was detected by Marcus Sachs, director of the Internet Storm Center. It seems that the number of devices infected is around 300 and their vulnerability was related to unpatched version of Microsoft’s operating system.

There was a patched released by Microsoft in October which could solve the problem, but the device manufacturer said that there is a 90-days notice be given before the machines could be patched.
“For 90 days these infected machines could easily be used in an attack, including, for example, the leaking of patient information,” said Rodney Joffe vice president to a company created to deal with the worm. “They also could be used in an attack that affects other devices on the same networks.”
“Once they work out what they’ve got, who knows who they will sell access to,” he said. “This has to be fixed.” So the conclusion is that we should be in alert that the information might get in wrong hands? Who has this interest?
