7 tips to boost your Wireless Router Signal
Posted on May 28, 2010 in How to, SecurityBuildings where never designed with network cable in mind and consequently we all had issues with your wireless signal. The first thing we should consider before talking about how we can improve our wireless network is the network’s security. It was not once when some of my neighbors left their wireless network open, with the default admin password. This is a really bad habit.
So before improving your wireless network, make sure it is secured and then you can follow the steps below:
- Position of Wireless Router. When you are installing a home wireless network it is indicate to place your router in a center location within your house. In this way you minimize leakage.
- Reduce wireless interference. You must avoid using wireless electronics that use the 2.4GHz frequency because your router might be “affected”. Also you should opt for cordless phones that use the 5.8GHz or 900MHz frequencies.
- Change router’s channel. Wireless routers can broadcast on several different channels and sometimes one wireless channel is clearer than others. From the configuration page you can change this channel and see if your signal strength improves.
- Get equipment from the same vendor. If you get the router and the network adaptor from the same vendor, the performance can be boost of up to twice.
- Update firmware or drivers. Updates are always welcomed, both when it comes about the router firmware or computer’s network adapter. Updates can fix bugs, smoothen out performance and reliability, and maybe even add new features.
- Get a wireless repeater. Wireless repeater will extend the wireless network’s range without installing additional wiring. All you have to do is to place them approximately halfway between your previous wireless access point and your computer, and power them on.
- Change router’s antenna. Usually routers have an antenna that broadcasts the signal equally within a certain circular radius. If you get a high-gain antenna then the signal can be focused into one direction instead of all directions.
If you have other tips how a Wireless Router Signal can be boost than you might want to share your experience with us.
Or if you have tried out one of the tips listened above then let us know if the result was the one expected.

You could also try using the Aluminium foil trick, I tried it and works awesome. Just use a sheet of aluminium foil to reflect the wasted signals to your Wifi Laptop,
Or you could get a directional antenna instead of the omni-directional one (which is usually the case).
