2009 Security threat report

In the last couple of years Internet had become a battle field and the target for cyber criminals. These have passed from e-mails attacks to exploiting low secured websites by injecting them with malicious code. In this way, every user visiting the specific webpage gets a nice infection on his computer.

Accordingly to the Sophos Security threat report, the top countries hosting malware on the web are US 37% followed by China 27.7% and Russia 9.1%. In 2007 China was hosting more than half of all the world malware while in 2008 this percent has been halved.

Regarding the threats, e-mails with infected attachments have taken the control with an increase of 500% in one year. Another method used by cyber criminals was the creation of a fake antivirus software. Many uses have faced up with a pop up message while visiting a website which was asking them to download the anti-virus software because they were in danger. Unfortunately that was the virus. Another method was dedicated to the so popular social networks. Users were receiving messages from friends’ hacked accounts linking to third-party websites designed to infect the recipient’s computer.

The most annoying action it remains the spam. In the last years spam methods have evaluated from e-mail spam to blog spam, social network spam and newsletter spam. The leader country to spam contribution is US with 17.5%.
