The Art of Online Self Defense
Posted on September 25, 2008 in MiscPersonal self-defense should be a class that is required in every high school across the world; however, many people fail to even care about their own defense in case of attack. Much like the real world, we should be protecting ourselves online, as well. Every time we log on to the Internet, we open ourselves to many more dangers than we would on the street. There are viruses that can shut down our computers and make them drones, there is spyware that can see every website we visit and the emails we send out, and there are hackers looking to steal our personal information to use it for their own evil.
To start out, you’ll want the latest operating system updates on your computer. These in
stall essential security software and work out kinks and loopholes that were left in previous versions of your operating system. On top of this, make sure your computer is optimized and setup with the latest and greatest security suite programs. While the best programs normally make you pay a nominal fee to get setup, some are free and work just as well as the pay to use software.
The best way to protect your identity online is to know what the hackers are looking for. They want your cookie information, usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and any other personal information you may have leaked away on the Internet. Entering this data into a field on the Internet can leave you well unprotected if your software isn’t up to date. Know how you can wipe these types of files off of your computer after use, as well.
Most hackers only go after those who don’t know how to protect themselves, as there are weak and easy target. Even installing a simple firewall may be all you need. However far you decide to protect yourself, just remember that if you don’t follow through and continue to protect yourself, to someone else’s bad ways.
